To make sure you have a strong and successful website that will attract a lot of users, and more importantly that will keep those users coming back, there are certain rules that should always be followed. Here are four major guidelines to help those starting off…
1 – Avoid Excessive Banner Ads
Filling a webpage with banner advertisements will only make it more likely for visitors to ignore the ads than anything else. Using a limited, yet relevant selection of ads, you will provide website guests with something that will catch their attention. Remember it’s about quality not quantity.
2 – Avid Splash Pages
What is a splash page? It is that sometimes annoying introductory page that welcomes you to a site. Many visitors dislike these pages as they are, in most cases, absolutely useless. Unless you are head of a big company and are trying to output a very professional look, splash pages are not recommended.
3 – Avoid Audio and Video
If you are going to provide the option of letting a user watch a video or listen to audio on your site, then that is fine. It is always bothersome however, when an annoying tune is playing in the background while trying to read text on a webpage, or if a video starts playing by default when the visitor is not at all interested in viewing it.
4 – Stay Simple!
Ease of navigation and good organization are what most people are looking for when browsing the internet. No one wants to spend a half hour looking for information that they know is buried somewhere deep in your website. It is important to remember however that simplicity should not affect your website’s appearance. A site can have a very straightforward navigation menu yet still be very visually attractive.
